Facts about the Norwegian Fjord Horse

Fun & Interesting Facts about the Norwegian Fjord

Did you know . . . ?

-Norwegian fjords are one of the oldest breeds of horse.

-You and me know this horse as the Norwegian fjord, but the people in Norway know them as Fjordings.

-After archaeologists examined a Viking burial site it indicated that Norwegian fjords have been selectively breed for over 2,000 years.

-The dun colour is a dilution gene and is a dominant gene.

Often i find that my fjord mare is very dominant.

-Although the fjord horse are mostly the colour dun, there are many different shades. Depending on the coat, whether or not you clip them and how their coats change in summer and winter. For example: In winter their coats may turn darker than their coat in summer.

-The Norwegian fjord horse was also used during WWII, it handled the difficult terrain very well, but it was also served as food to the people of the Netherlands during food shortages.
